A practical résumé review checklist for Canada

Review your application for relevance, evidence and clarity before sending it to an employer.

A résumé has a specific job: help an employer understand the relevant experience you actually have. Before rewriting the document, choose a representative role. Reviewing a résumé against a real job description is more useful than polishing every sentence without knowing its audience.

Begin with the role, not the template

Read the responsibilities and requirements, then list the experience you can genuinely use as evidence. Mark any gaps honestly. A requirement you have not met should not quietly become a skill claim in the document.

Make the evidence easy to find

Replace vague statements with clear descriptions of the work you performed, the responsibility you held and an outcome you can support. Use accurate numbers when you have them. If you do not, explain the contribution without inventing a percentage, team size or financial result.

Write out unfamiliar abbreviations where they could confuse a reader outside your previous organisation. International experience can be valuable; explain the context rather than assuming a Canadian reader knows every employer, credential or internal job title.

Check the document as a whole

Dates, job titles and education details should agree across your résumé, cover letter and professional profile. Check that your phone number and professional email address work. Use the file format requested by the employer and make sure the file opens with readable text.

Job Bank’s official résumé guidance recommends clear, relevant content and warns against unnecessary personal information. A Social Insurance Number does not belong in a résumé. Follow the employer’s application instructions rather than assuming every organisation uses the same format.

Give the cover letter a separate purpose

A cover letter can explain why the role interests you and connect a few relevant examples to its requirements. It does not need to repeat the entire résumé. Avoid claims about an organisation that you have not checked, and be specific about the position you are applying for.

Do a final review before submission

  • Does the document clearly match the intended role?
  • Can you explain and support every claim in an interview?
  • Are names, dates and contact details consistent?
  • Have you removed unrelated sensitive information?
  • Have you followed the employer’s instructions?

A review or editing service can help organise and communicate your information. It cannot guarantee an automated screening result, interview or job offer. Keep a copy of each version you submit so you can prepare for the next conversation using the same information the employer received.
