EDUCATION PLANNING

Compare study options in Canada with better questions

A preparation guide for comparing programs, campuses and practical requirements without confusing admissions with immigration advice.

A program name is only the beginning of an education decision. Two courses with similar titles can differ in delivery, entry requirements and practical fit. Build a comparison that records the exact program and campus, the official source and the questions you still need answered.

Define the learning goal

Write down the subject or capability you want to develop and how it relates to your next step. Consider the delivery format, schedule, location and level of study you can realistically manage. This makes it easier to compare options for their usefulness rather than relying on a broad promotional description.

Compare the same information for each option

Create a table for the program name, campus, intake, admission requirements, duration, delivery method, published costs and refund conditions. Record the date of the information. If a detail is missing, mark it as a question for the institution rather than filling the gap with an assumption.

Ask which documents the institution needs and how they should be provided. Keep original records and avoid sending sensitive material to an unverified contact or through a general enquiry form.

Check the relevant official information

For international applicants, consult IRCC’s designated learning institution list and confirm the exact campus and program. Being listed as a DLI does not mean every program qualifies for a post-graduation work permit, or that an individual meets all requirements.

Use the institution’s own admissions team for current academic requirements and published fee or refund questions. Immigration eligibility and study-permit advice are separate matters for an appropriately licensed Canadian immigration professional.

Look at the practical fit

Think through travel, housing, study time, equipment and other commitments relevant to your circumstances. For a campus in the GTA, compare the actual journey and delivery schedule rather than treating every Toronto-area location as equally convenient.

If a future profession has licensing requirements, verify recognition with the relevant regulator before relying on a program’s marketing description. An education provider, employer and professional regulator may each answer a different part of your question.

Leave with a decision record

Summarise what you verified, what remains uncertain and who can answer each outstanding question. You may be ready to apply, or you may need more information. Either outcome is more useful than treating an incomplete comparison as a final decision.
